One last Akureyri story. Sky was completely cloud free yesterday. So, last night, we drove 30 minutes north of Akureyri where the fjord meets the Arctic Sea to see if the northern lights were visible. The sky to the north never got completely dark. About 9:30 PM we drove 15 minutes back south, south of the town of Dalvik, and found a picnic table turnout. Sky in all directions was dark and cloud free. Millions of stars visible including the Milky Way. To the east, it started as a greenish cloud, and spread across the sky to the west, about the size of a large rainbow, large green cloud like formation of northern lights. Never saw it before, and it was amazing.
But, not sure how to do long exposures, so photos were worthless, we'll try to figure it out prior to the return trip north in about a month...
